LITHEA Mediterranean Grafts: Corbulas (design P.Piu) and Monreale (design by E. Salmistraro)

In Sardinia, on the plains of Campidano, the round baskets, usually deep and wide, used to hold and measure flour and which women used to carry around balanced on their heads are called Corbulas. These baskets are made by intertwining lengths of hay and cane fibers, embellished with brightly coloured brocade and wool inserts that create simple geometric or local flora and fauna inspired decorations. In the olden days they would decorate farmers’ houses by hanging groups of baskets together on the walls. This project uses this secondary use as its subject, highlighting the bottom section of the basket, which is its most elaborate part and to which a striking halo of light has been added.

Mediterranean Grafts is the title of the collection that the Sicilian company Lithea is presenting at the 2018 Bathroom and furniture exhibition: a collaboration with designers who have a special bond (due to their origins and family histories) with the Mediterranean.

The new proposals of Martinelli Venezia Studio, Philippe Nigro, Pierluigi Piu, Elena Salmistraro have been able to “live” their inspiration interpreting them and creating surfaces that tell stories, technologically advanced tapestries conceived also for custom-made designs or for interior furnishing for bathrooms which can also be used in other areas of the house.

Stone materials and precious stones will be the key theme of these designs. Stones which Lithea works with great expertise, coming from half a century’s worth of experience in this sector, bringing together the talent of specialised artisans and limited edition creations.

Lithea continues to carry out its research launched in 2016 with the project “Mediterranean weaves“ experimenting with shapes, material and the traditions of a magnificent land: Our stand will also be displaying the Centro Centrini cladding and the Tavoloranni round table, both in pastel green marble designed by Mariella Ferrera, the Salina wash basin from the Isole collection and the Matelassè cladding, both in black Marquinia marble designed by Marco Piva.
